Early Childhood Tooth Decay
Kid and Child focused Dentist In Grand Blanc MI
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Several specific types of bacteria (“Sugar Bugs”) that live on the teeth cause decay. When sugar is consumed, the bacteria use the sugar and then manufacture acids that dissolve the teeth and cause an infection in the tooth. This infection is called decay.
What Is Early Childhood Tooth Decay?
Babies who go to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice are more likely to get tooth decay. Because the sugar in formula, milk, or juice stays in contact with the teeth for a long time during the night, the teeth can decay quickly.
Some Tips To Avoid Early Childhood Tooth Decay
- Put your child to bed with a bottle of plain water, not milk or juice.
- Stop nursing when your child is asleep or has stopped sucking on the bottle.
- Try not to let your child walk around using a bottle of milk or juice as a pacifier.
- Start to teach your child to drink from a cup at about six months of age. Plan to stop using a bottle by 12 to 14 months at the latest.
- Don’t dip your child’s pacifier in honey or sugar.
What Is Fluoride?
Fluoride helps make teeth strong and prevents tooth decay. If the water where you live does not have enough fluoride, your doctor may prescribe fluoride supplements (fluoride drops or pills). You would give these drops or pills every day, starting when your child is about six months old. Only give as much as the directions say to use. Also, be sure to call your local water authority and ask if your water is fluoridated. If it is, tell your dentist or pediatrician so that your child is not being over fluoridated. Children should take these drops or pills until they are 12 to 16 years old (or until you move to an area with fluoride in the water).

Everyone is the office is so nice! Everything about their office is so inviting for kids and their parents. From the presentation of their office to the friendliness and comfort of the staff! It was our first visit and my son left saying "I can't wait to go back to the dentist!" Yes, my son actually said that...all day long after his apt! They put everything in words for my son to feel comfortable and not afraid. We were referred to them from another dentist and we will continue to use them for both our boys!

My daughter has bad anxiety over the dentist (like every child) and they are so good with her. They take their time with her and make sure she is ready. I recommend this place to everyone!

Our 3 year old son had his first ever dentist appointment today at grand blanc pediatric dentist and he did so amazing! The entire staff was wonderful and made him excited about his visit. Dr Kate and dental hygienist Kara were so incredibly sweet and made our son feel so comfortable, even going back for his appointment without mommy in the room ️ He told me when we got in the car that he can’t wait to go back for his next appointment ️ I definitely would recommend this office for your little ones.

I take all my children here. After a bad experience at another pediatric office, my kids hated the dentist. Since we switched to GBPD my kids don’t scream or cry when it’s time to go to the dentist!
